Hail Kinak,
I said goodbye to Kelly, for I probably would not be going back to Stone Town for a lo-o-o-ng time. I was on my way to Cinnabar Island. If I beat the gym leader, I'll get the Fire Stone that I desired. My trip to the ferry was rather uneventful. The ferry seemed completely empty, except for a few of the crew. I sat down and leaned by head back. I may have fallen asleep for a while, but I did not care. It was going to be a long trip.
A faint tug on my jacket sleeve awoke me. I turned to see it was another passenger. On her feet were dark fishermen boots. Dark green braise , which seemed a couple sizes too large for her, covered her legs. Her simple white shirt was covered by worn brown vest riddled with hooks and lures. Her gentle face shone out from beneath a fishermen hat, also with hooks and lures. Her azure hair, sparkling in the noon sun, hung down in four blades in the front while the remaining was pulled back tight in a ponytail. Her eyes were jet black and equally as cold. In her other hand, she bore a fishing rod.
"Sorry to disturb you -" she started to say.
"Did we dock at Cinnabar?" I interrupted.
"I'm afraid we have not. I was just bored on the long trip," she explained. She clutched a Pokeball. "You game?" Her dark eyes peered out from beneath the dusty brim. A smile grew on my face.
The ferry made the perfect battle field. Not a soul stood on it but us. The crew did not seem to mind, either. They actually looked rather glad that something was happening. The woman rolled her Pokeball out in the empty space. It stopped dead center. Before its contents could be exposed, one of my balls was cast. Hers burst open, and a bivalve shape emerged. It was obviously a Cloyster, easily recognized by its jutting spikes, but it seemed rather small for one. I realized that she must have evolved it early, meaning this one was still not fully grown, which meant an easier time on me. As my ball bounced off the floor, it broke open and revealed nothing.
"What is this," she demanded, "a joke?" I laughed to myself.
"This is my Pokemon," I flatly told her. As she spoke, a small area above the clam darkened. Swirling gases soon revealed an orb. Two dead eyes and a haunting smile laid on it. It floated, looking at its petrified opponent. "Met Rei."
The battle began. After recovering from its shock, the Cloyster fired two freezing bolts at Rei. She quickly phased out, and then phased in behind the clam. It turned in time to met her tongue. It quivered as the tongue scraped across its face, but then clamped down on it. The specter's eyes bulged as the squeezing continued. She pulled in furious efforts to free her tongue. Finally, the saliva gave just enough lubrication to help it be pulled free. Things did not look good. Rei's tongue is her primary weapon. The pearl smirked at the phantom, slanting its eyes fiercely. Rei was a master of mind games, and paid no attention to this. Instead, she opened up her mind into its. The strain on the clam's eyes ceased as it was bombarded by a shower of psychic waves. They sank straight through all of its armor, right to its defenseless mind. It tried to focus through the pain, but could not concentrate. It snapped its shell shut, which did not help at all.
Rei's attack was highly undependable, though. The way each one would affect it varied each time. Each wave was like a wide spread beam. While very large, only so much of each one would make contact with its target. Also, the psychic talent was a difficult one to control. More than usually, a beam would go astray. It was one of these painless moments that the Cloyster acted on.
Summoning on all of the power it could, the shell flew open, launching an invisible ray. The only way its presence as even recognized was by the air fogged up from the extreme cold. In a direct hit, the ghost was struck. She fell to the floor shivering. The opening of the Cloyster's shell began to mist up again as it readied another. Stiffly, she levitated from the floor, and pulled herself to the left. The Cloyster had trouble turning itself. It retained the blast for a little longer as it hopped to turn its body to face its advisory.
Rei was apparently thinking up a scheme, like usual. Every time the Cloyster had itself almost in position to fire, Rei moved from its sight. The Cloyster was becoming very agitated. Still, it held in the freezing shot. The cold was causing frost to build up on its shell thickly. Rei kept the Cloyster chasing it for a few minutes. We did not realize it ourselves, but our battle was attracting quite a few of the crew member's attention. Abruptly, the Ghost stopped. She just froze in place, awaiting the beam.
The power the Cloyster had in that one shot must have been unbelievable. Upon its release, the Cloyster was blown back. It was now visible as a thick white beam the span of the Cloyster's shell. Rei did not even seem to care that it collided with her head on. The force nearly knocked her off the edge of the ship. Again, Rei fell to floor, shivering violently. It slowly brought up its face, still laying on its side, and glared at the pearl. Soon, its eyes began to swirl with hypnotic colors. This dazzled the Cloyster, but its trainers voice proved stronger. She ordered it to close its shell again, thereby obstructing its sight. It followed the command and moved to close itself.
... but it never shut. Confused, the Cloyster put all of its strength into shutting itself, but it could not even budge it. The trainer saw why. All of the time when Rei had it chase it around, the immense cold had caused a build up of condensation. Long story short, it froze itself open. The familiar evil grin of Rei had returned to her face. Her eyes now burst with brilliant colors, soothing the pearl's spirit. In no time, it shut its eyes, and began to snore. Its trainer frantically sought an item to aid it, but as she stumbled looking for it, Rei moved in for the kill. Bringing herself dead above the slumbering opponent, Rei released her mind.
A surge could be seen between her and the Cloyster, as it had its mind torn asunder. In a final blow, a large ball of light raced down the surge, swallowing it as it went. When it met the pearl's head, burst of light radiated from the Cloyster's eyes and cries of agony from its mouth. The hideous expression of pain remained on its twisted face, but it stood still and motionless. She gawked open mouthed at her fried Cloyster. The whole crew was cheering. We had no idea that our battle was so engrossing.
"Second round?" she questioned, as she withdrew her wiped out Pokemon.
"Of course." We both grabbed other Pokeball and prepared to throw them.
"Land ho!" a crew man cried out. There was actually a moan of disappointment sounding throughout the ferry. I stared into her cold eyes.
"We'll finish this on my way back," I insisted.
"I'll be there," she promised.
I gathered my things, and walked off the ferry. I pulled out a map and followed its directions to reach the gym. As I came to an intersection, I paused to see which way to go. At that point, something bumped into be from behind. I turned to see it was the same girl I was fighting earlier. She was busy looking into a similar map, and had not seen me.
"You?" I said. "What are you doing?"
"I'm going to the gym," she said. Then she looked at me with her cold eyes again. "What are you doing?"
"Going to the gym."
"Oh..." We stood in silence. I seized the moment. Pushing her, I darted to the Cinnabar Gym.
"Hey!" she yelled.
"Sorry," my fading voice called out. "I gotta get to the gym. See you later."
"Oh, no you don't," she stated, determined, as the dashed after me...
